大家的日本語（皆の日本語）第7課上到日語過去式為「ます→ました」，
其中課文的會話有一段是ホセ・サントス夫婦去拜訪山田一郎的場景：
山田一郎：いらっしゃい。どうぞお上がりください。
ホセ・サントス：失礼します。
而第8課的會話是延續第7課，ホセ・サントス夫婦要離開時的場景：
ホセ・サントス：あ、もう８時ですね。そろそろ失礼します。
山田一郎：そうですか。
マリア・サントス：今日はどうもありがとうございました。
每次上到這裡，學生都會覺得很奇怪，
為何進門前跟告別的時候，ホセ・サントスさん都說「失礼します」呢？
說明前，我們先瞭解一下：
「失礼」在日語中是指「不禮貌的行為」
「失礼します」的意思是：
「これから失礼な行為をします。お許しください。」
（現在將做出對您不禮貌的行為，請您見諒。）
所以ホセ・サントスさん進門前所說的「失礼します」是指：
「我要進門了，造成的不禮貌，請您見諒。」
要告辭的時候，因為「對熱情招待的主人提出自己要離開，會對主人不禮貌」，
所以還是會說「失礼します」來表示告辭離開之意。
何時用「失礼しました」呢？
用普通過去式來思考即可。
比方說幾天後，ホセ・サントス在路上遇到之前拜訪的山田一郎，
他會說：
「先日はどうも失礼しました」
（前些日子真是麻煩您）
甚至在告辭的時候，還會有這樣並用的情形：
「どうも失礼しました。では、これで失礼します。」
（不好意思，佔用了您的時間，那麼，我先告辭了）
所以「失礼します」可是包含了「謝意」跟「歉意」喔～
